More Than Monkeys

Introduction – This paper was written by a high school and college mathematics instructor. It was not written or produced by any particular church or denomination. It is provided free of charge as an expression of God’s love for mankind.

Creation or evolution, our worldview and perspective on life is largely influenced by our understanding of where we came from and where we are going. Actually, there are thousands of theories concerning the origin of life and the universe. Some of my ancestors believed a tradition that a turtle and a rabbit created the earth. Another very large group says that the earth rests on the back of four elephants who stand on a large turtle.

Unfortunately, scientific theories are equally as presumptuous, to say the least. Consider the theory of evolution and the big bang theory. Many in the scientific community say that ten to fifteen billion years ago, there was a small particle, perhaps as small as an English pea. It was incredibly dense with all the mass of the entire universe. For some reason, it became unstable and exploded, scattering stars, planets, and various debris by the billions across the ever expanding vastness of space. Then, about 3.5 billion years ago, certain elements randomly joined together and came to life with primitive organisms evolving into more sophisticated creatures over time. Some scientists say that lightning may have struck various lifeless compounds to initiate life. They may have seen that procedure on an old science fiction movie. Other scientists say that visiting aliens may have left living material behind on one of their visits to earth, perhaps trash from their lunch. Around five million years ago, ape-like humans are said to have lived in various locations. Remember the famous Nebraska ape-man. He was extrapolated from a single tooth of an extinct pig. Piltdown Man, the missing link, was yet another hoax. Finally, they say that modern humans evolved on earth around ten thousand years ago.

They base all this development on random chance. The probability of the random arrangement of the enzymes necessary for life is said to be approximately 1 in 10^40000. That is 1 followed by 40000 zeros. In the field of mathematics, we consider 1 in 10^50 to be essentially impossible. One in 10^40000 would be outrageously impossible. Furthermore, the concept of irreducible systems makes it unlikely for complex systems and organs to evolve piece by piece over great intervals of time, when the individual parts are dependent on each other. It is hard to depend on other critical components that will not evolve for another thousand years or more. Finally, there is no reason for natural selection to favor components of incomplete systems and organs that do not function or provide any benefit or advantage.

Scientists have other "big" ideas. The big rip theory says that as the universe continues to expand at a staggering rate, there is a danger that the universe could develop a tear with disastrous consequences. The big crunch theory says that the universe will eventually collapse and initiate a brand new big bang. The big freeze theory is the most widely accepted theory for the end of the universe. It says that all life will die and the universe will grow dark with everything in the universe approaching a temperature of absolute zero (-459.67°F). Scientists have no sound explanation for the beginning and no hope for the future. They speak of a small particle at the beginning, but do not know its origin. A world-renowned British physicist confirms the impossibility of random enzyme development. Yet he credits life to visiting aliens with no explanation for the origin of the aliens.

What is the beginning of the earth? "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Genesis 1:1 KJV). "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear" (Hebrews 11:3 KJV). What is the beginning of man? "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them" (Genesis 1:27 KJV). What is the beginning of God? "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty" (Revelation 1:8 KJV). He is eternal. He has neither beginning nor end. He has always been and always will be.

The Bible says that we should be able to look around and see God's hand in creation. We look at an automobile and recognize that it was made by man's design. Our bodies and the world around us are made by God's design. They are far more complex and precise than all automobiles. "20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools" (Romans 1:20-22 KJV). "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God" (Psalm 14:1 KJV).

How does it feel to think that you are a random carbon unit, an invisible speck in time and space? This is what our children and college students are being taught. Children should know that their life has purpose and God loves them. On the other hand, how do dangerous or unstable people respond to the notion of life that is random with no purpose and no eternal consequences? They show little or no restraint and we see the results of their violent behavior in the news every day.

Why does such foolishness seem to reign? Because people in secular society want to make their own rules. They will gladly change the truth of God for a lie. "24Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: 25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen" (Romans 1:24-25 KJV).

You are much more than a random animal. Christ died for you before you were born. God formed you in the womb (Isaiah 44:24 KJV) and His desire for you is love and eternal life. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16 KJV). "24God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26and hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27that they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us" (Acts 17:24-27 KJV). God is not far away. What good news!

If the Spirit of God is speaking to you today, then today is your day of salvation. Second Corinthians 6:2 says that at just the right time, God heard you. If you cry out to God, He will hear you. On the day of salvation, He will help you. He will send the Holy Spirit to guide you and draw you to Him. Certainly, the "right time" is now. Today is the day of salvation! There is no guarantee of tomorrow. Your heart may become hard and your ears deaf to His call. Today, if you are fortunate enough to hear His voice, I urge you to say yes to Christ and His love.

You can experience a spiritual rebirth today. Romans 10:9 (KJV) says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

Will you pray today and begin your journey with Christ? “Lord Jesus, I confess with my mouth today that You are the only begotten Son of the living God. I repent and turn from my sins. I believe that You died on the cross to save me from my punishment and I receive You as Savior and Lord of my life. Please help me to grow in Your fellowship and serve You all the days of my life. I ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer today from your heart, then you have become a child of God. You have been born again and your adventure with Christ begins. Read the Bible each day, beginning with the book of John. Talk to God each day and ask for His help. Find a church that loves Jesus, loves people, worships God with enthusiasm, and teaches the Bible. They will help and encourage you on your journey with Christ.

May God bless you,
